Gandhi and Mandela

  Gandhi and Mandela both had the same dream, to live in a country that was self-ruled.  They had wanted to change the way their people were treated and how the foreign government were oppressing them.  Both men fought for what they believed was right and the freedom for their county.  They spent their entire life fighting for this cause and promoting nonviolence to make a change.   Both men had strong political influence when they were growing up so they ended up becoming lawyers.  Both Gandhi and Mandela spent there life in prison to prove a point that no matter what you do to them, they have their dream and beliefs to keep them sane as well as strong.  Without either of these men espceially Gandhi then alot of the changes that have and are taken place probable wouldn't have happended.  Because these men changed the way people handle things and proved that violence won't solve anything and only peace will make a bigger impact than violence will.

Day One PSA

Fahrenheit 9/11

  When the airplanes crashed into the Twin Towers that's when the government thought “ Now lets take the opportunity to scare the civilians to get them to trust us more than ever.” They started to recruit young men and women in poverty to join this pointless war.  They struck fear into the civilians to allow them to hate the Iraqians because of what they thought they did. They used the media to persuade others to get them join the military  to get them to control what people did and thought for so many years. The allowed them to take some of their privacy away from them to allow them to watch their every move. In a way they hurt and helped the government in this case because with this process of watching war people say and do they have caught and prevented taraists. But they kept this a secret and it upset people for what they were doing even if they were helping a little. When they wanted to go to war they kept bringing up 9/11 and how terrible it was they kept replaying it for months to keep the public scared and angry. They used advertisements to persuade young children who want to go to collage who want to help their family so they join the military to get the benefits. The government lied to them that they were fighting for a cause but as the war went on the soldiers realized that there was no point thats they were suffering for nothing losing their lives and sanity. Just so that when they went back they were left with nothing either killed themselves or ended up homeless. These young men who fought for their country end up with nothing its sad when you think about it. This war was one of our many mistakes and hopefully something this terrible doesn't happen again but then again thats just a silly dream.

West Memphis 3 Reflection

  The film West Memphis is based on three innocent teenagers accused of a murder.  Three little boys were found tied up naked and mutilated. When the bodies were found the media instantly jumped to conclusions saying it was sacrifices to the devil.  In reality they were just tied up beaten then thrown in a stream.  The media had manipulated this case making it seem horrific.  They wanted the town to be angry with the boys, since they were blinded my grief and anger they didn't dare question the evidence or their alibis assuming they were lying.  All they wanted were for them to go to prison and never leave.  When they were charged and sent to prison they felt safe again.  But not everyone agreed with what the state did.  They saw the injustice in this and reopened case.  So they created an organization called the innocent projects to help those three boys out of jail. 

  While I watched the film I became very angry.  How could the state let the court manipulate the case framing those three when it was clear that they didn't do it.  But because they were different and the people were scared they made sure to put those boys away for good.  It truly is sad to watch it happen and have it take years to finally obtain their freedom.   But that was only one case their are hundreds more just like the West Memphis 3 case.  This injustice needs to stop we need to work together so that it doesn't happen to bring justice to those who were done injustice. 

Miss Representation Reflection

The film Miss Representation is a document which discusses the negative  impact of the media on the role of women in our culture.  The film states that media messages affect our thoughts, attitude and actions and by doing so creates a fantasy world which our society accepts as reality.  In this day and age we are surrounded by media 24 hours a day, media has become the predominant communicator of our cultures values telling us who we can cannot be.  The media objectifies women telling them that their values lie in beauty, youth, and sexuality.  By doing so it is harder for women to be taking seriously as leaders, thus making it easier for men to stay in power.  The media also tell men that they should be violent, in control and that women must be treated as objects as well as second class citizens. The media even displays women as being manipulative and catty.

Women should be looked at as equals towards men not beneath.  Women are just as capable of doing what men can do.  Us women are put through a lot of stress we’re told to be compassionate as well as being number one out of everyone else to be the best of the best.  Our media is a destruction towards our culture.  The film states that “In 2010-midterm elections, women lost seats in the Congress for the first in 30 years.” (O’Keefe, 2010).  Not only that but women make up a little more than half the population in the United States and only 17% are actually part of the congress.  Men deem that politics is an only male thing that women should not be able to join.  They then begin to put these smart,brave women down with sexual remarks and profane comments.  It truly is disgusting and sad that men go out of their way to put these women down.  It’’s also disappointing that us women do it to each other as well as the men which only helps the mens case even more making it harder for us to do anything.  This is why we should stand up and fight against these men being cruel to us.  To finally be equal to one another.
